Launch of a postage stamp on the occasion of the centenary of the Palestinian Scout Movement
14 November 2013

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Palestinian Boy Scouts and Girl Guides Association have presented on Wednesday, in front of the tomb of the martyr President Yasser Arafat in Ramallah, a special stamp issue on the occasion of the centenary of the launch of the Scout Movement in Palestine.

Hussein al-Araj, head of the president's office, said in his speech on behalf of President Mahmoud Abbas that the centenary of the Scout Movement in Palestine clearly prooves how deep the roots of the Palestinian people are in this land, and how it developed for hundreds of years.

He stressed that the activities of the Palestinian movement in the occupied city of Jerusalem, which showed specifically in the month of Ramadan, confirm that Jerusalem is an integral [indivisible] part of the occupied Palestinian territories. They carry Jerusalem on their necks, and we see it in their eyes. It is not surprising that this celebration is held close to the shrine Abu Amar, as this is the right way to celebrate this anniversary. Dr. Safaa Nasir al-Din, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, said that the issuance of this stamp on the centenary of the Scout Movement was based on the fulfilment of the ministry's national responsibility for the people, and in honour of the continuous and enormous sacrifices for this movement and in honour of their deeds, and to commemorate the heroism and as embodiment of sovereignty. She hoped that through postage stamps a timely message goes to the world to be considered as a sign of the sovereignty of the State of Palestine on this land and as service to its children.

Dr. Safaa Nasir al-Din confirmed that the presence of the scout movement reflects the authentic spirit of our people. A spirit which is based on entrepreneurship (Pionierleistungen), volunteering, serving others and patritiotic conviction, which is inherent to the Palestinian people. This spirit accomapnied the Palestinian people through decades of the continued suffering to reach the goals of the national project: the inevitable ending the occupation. This will enable our people to live in freedom and dignity in an independent state.

She added: "The presence of the Scout Movement on this land for more than a hundred years demonstrates that we are an ancient people and an authentic people, that we have been here since the very beginning, and we will stay here until the end. What you are doing with your volunteer work, your initiative, your leadership and your service reinforced the steadfastness of our people and its tenaciyt and its survival on this homeland."

The governor of Ramallah and al-Bireh, Laila Ghannam, stressed that this centennial prooves the existence of our people in this land, even before anyone was thinking about the existence of something that they call themselves state of Israel. She pointed out that this stamp, which bears the logo of the Scout Movement and the slogan 'Centenary of the Palestinian Scouts Movement', is an ambassador for Palestine. This stamp embodies the state and the message that Palestine is here and will remain here.

In the words of Mohammed Sawalmeh of the Palestinian Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, the new stamp is dedicated to the martyr President Yasser Arafat, to the martyrs of our people, to the Scout Movement and to the prisoners in Israeli prisons.

He pointed out that the 39th World Scout Conference, which was held in Brazil two years ago, and to date of the emergence of the Scout Movement in Palestine: the year 1911.

On the occasion of this anniversary, special diplomas were awarded. In the celebration participated a delegation from the Arab Republic of Egypt, under the leadership of the Deputy Minister of Sports, the Egyptian ambassador to Palestine and the a representative of the Secretary General of the Arab League.

Pope's Ready For Historic Trip To The Holy Land As Itinerary Announced

(Milan/k.c.)
[...]

On Sunday, the Pope will leave Jordan’s Queen Alia airport and fly 75 kilometers by helicopter directly to Bethlehem where he will meet with Palestinian State President Mahmoud Abbas. Francis will address Palestinian authorities and celebrate Mass in Manger Square.

To close the Holy Mass in Manger Square, Francis will recite the Regina Caeli or the Queen of Heaven, an ancient Latin Hymn dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Francis will then share a lunch with families from Palestine in the Franciscan convent of Casa Nova in Bethlehem and then retire for "private time" in the Church of the Nativity, possibly the oldest existing church in the world and a site that is located over the cave that marks the birthplace of Jesus.

In keeping with his signature humanitarian approach, Francis will meet with children from three West Bank refugee camps – Dheisheh, Aida and Beit Jibrin. During a highly symbolic visit to Italy's island of Lampedusa last July, his first official trip outside of the Italian mainland as pontiff, he called for understanding and solidarity for refugees around the world and has been a powerful voice in promoting assistance for displaced persons.

16 JANUARY 2014 - OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR
UN Headquarters, New York

The International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People was launched at the opening of the 2014 session of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People on 16 January 2014.

[...]

Background

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed by the United Nations on or around 29 November each year, in accordance with mandates given by the General Assembly in its resolutions 32/40 B of 2 December 1977, 34/65 D of 12 December 1979, and subsequent resolutions adopted by the General Assembly on the question of Palestine. This year's observance at United Nations Headquarters in New York will take place on Monday, 25 November 2013. Observance at the United Nations Offices at Geneva and Vienna will take place on 29 November 2013.

The date of 29 November was chosen because of its meaning and significance to the Palestinian people. On that day in 1947, the General Assembly adopted resolution 181 (II), which came to be known as the Partition Resolution. That resolution provided for the establishment in Palestine of a “Jewish State” and an “Arab State”, with Jerusalem as a corpus separatum under a special international regime. Of the two States to be created under this resolution, only one, Israel, has so far come into being.

The Solidarity Day has traditionally provided an opportunity for the international community to focus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine is still unresolved and that the Palestinian people is yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the General Assembly, namely, the right to self-determination without external interference, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and property from which they had been displaced.

In response to the call of the United Nations, various activities are undertaken annually by Governments and civil society in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. These activities include, among other things, the issuance of special messages of solidarity with the Palestinian people, the organization of meetings, the dissemination of publications and other information material, and the screening of films.

At United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People each year holds a special meeting to observe the Solidarity Day. Invited speakers include the Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, the President of the Security Council, and representatives of relevant United Nations bodies, intergovernmental organizations and Palestine. NGOs are invited to attend and a representative of the international community of NGOs accredited to the Committee addresses the meeting. The special meeting is webcast live.

A special bulletin containing the statements delivered and messages received on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity is published annually by the Division for Palestinian Rights of the United Nations Secretariat.
Other activities organized in New York in connection with the observance of the Day of Solidarity include a Palestinian exhibit or a cultural event sponsored by the Committee and presented by the Permanent Observer Mission of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, and the screening of a documentary film.

Meetings in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People are also held at the United Nations Offices at Geneva (ungeneva.ngoliaison@unog.ch) and Vienna (protocol@unvienna.org).

The United Nations Information Centres (UNICs) worldwide are available to assist Governments, NGOs and others wishing to organize special activities in connection with the observance by providing information and documentation.
