Observations suggest that initially post offices were equipped with one of the two types of self-adhesive labels (A1 and B2). The smaller type (B2) is common to both Gaza and the Westbank, whereas the larger label (A1) seems only to have been used in the Westbank. The other types start appearing from 1998 onwards, often at newly established offices. From about 1999 some offices in the Westbank (initially the larger ones) started to use handstamp markings (type C). Apparently they had run out of expensive self-adhesive labels and were provided rubber handstamps from a central source. Labels in type B3 start appearing in eary 2005, type B4 (Westbank only) in September 2009. The blank labels (bearing no office name) are known to be in use mainly in the Gaza area (Gaza 4, Gaza 5, Jabalya), and at Central Sorting Ramallah. Many of the recently established new post offices never received handstamps and had initially to resort to manual markings (X), as do some other offices at times. Examples are known from: Zababdeh, Kafr Kaddom, Illar, Alkafreyat, Jayyus, Bidya, Asira Ashamaliya, Alfar'a Camp, Beit Liqya, Beit Lid, Beit Sahour, Ber Nabala, Kafr Thulth, and Al-'Ubeidiya. Earliest examples of type X date from 2003. A few examples about the numbers used: Al-Yamoon, opened March 2003, had reached no.7 by February 2006, Ajja (Ageh) got to no. 6 in two years of operating, Qafen went from 9 to 63 in five years. But on the other hand: Jericho jumped almost 2000 in one year. In March 2011, 'Palestine Post' introduced the UPU software package "IPS Light" which resulted in the switch to computer-printed barcode labels (type D). In an early phase labels (types D1, D1a, and D2) are applied at either head POs or central sorting as not all offices had yet been connected to the new system. Most offices actually apply old labels (mainly type B4), which are then labelled-over with IPS labels bearing a corresponding number. At some offices not supplied with 'old' labels a handwritten registration number sometimes appears besides the label itself.
Please note these listings are in their very early stages. I am establishing a database connecting the use of a label to a specific date and postmark. Some images of registration labels and valuable information have been contributed by Thomas Schubert, Jan R. Blok, and Paul Phillips; websites like Ebay and other sources were also used.
