A Short Introduction To The Philately Of Palestine

The Palestinian Tariff 2004–2012

The following tables list the main postal charges in force in Palestine between 2004 and 30 April 2012. Previous rates are shown seperately: 1994–2000 and 2000–2004. There were only minor changes between this tarriff and the previous "Tarriff 2000". The current Palestine Post tariff (as from 1 May 2012) is shown here (West Bank). In the Gaza Strip, the 2004 tarriff is still in force.

All information is based on the Palestine Post document "Palestinian Postal Charges : Recommendations and General Information" dated 19.08.2010 provided by the Philatelic Burean in al-Bireh. Only the main charges are listed below, for bulk mail, printed matter, telegrams, fax and other charges, please confer the original document.

For foreign destinations, this tariff lists always two charges: one via Israel, the other direct. It should be noted that Israel does still not allow direct mail transfers and all mail (including the inland mail travelling between Westbank and Gaza) is forced to go through Israel where it is subjected to censorship and delays, though the document actually states "service method direct applies now for Arab countries only".

Note that the Palestinian currency 1 Dinar = 1000 Fils is a virtual currency only: notes and coins used in Palestine are Israeli Shekel (NIS) with 1 NIS = 100 Agorot. The official conversion rate has not changed since 2004: 1 Dinar (1000 Fils) = 6 NIS. The rate against international currencies varies from day to day of course, roughly 5 NIS equal 1 €.
